Now

WITH what gladness of heart and joy of expectancy the thought of the New Year is welcomed! This period of time suggests much to the eager thinker. With wondering thought mortals scan the future, questioning what it may unfold to them of advancement and joy. Oftentimes the thought of an unimproved past casts a shadow over the hope of desired achievement. Were humanity to observe each day, each hour, as an opportunity for development, were they to look upon the immediate "now" as possessing golden opportunities for attaining their salvation, a new and fresh concept of service would be gained, regrets would be lessened, and courage strengthened. It is only the time on the calendar which changes: the "now" of the supreme Being, the creator of the universe, changes not. This is a metaphysical fact.

Christian Science teaches that humanity should endeavor to improve each moment as it comes fresh from our loving Father-Mother God full of opportunities to serve, to bless, and to receive. In strict accord with the Scriptures we must view the present as the only time we really have. The good we have gained from the past is ours now; and our use of this "now" will determine future events.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." Through the lens of spiritual understanding, he glimpsed the eternality of God, and saw in consequence that we may know God and His heaven even now. To the present sense of things divisions of time are important, but they should be recognized for what they are, not for what they are not. In so far as they enable us to be orderly and punctual, helping to promote precision, uniformity, poise, exactness, and justice, they are to be utilized, for these are qualities which give a finer mode to our ways and greater beauty to our existence.
