[Written for the Sentinel]

"And the shepherds returned"

Again the blessed Christmastide has passed;
The world has looked in wonder toward the star,
And visioned those blest shepherds from afar:
The gold, the frankincense, and myrrh, amassed
And brought by three
Who journeyed long and met
To kneel before the little feet,
Of infant sweet,
Destined to wend their way to Olivet,
And then—to Calvary.

And like the shepherds and those men of old,
The world has worshiped, brought a little gold
Out of its garnered store,
A little incense burned,
And now takes up the daily round once more.
Oh, kindled memory of Bethlehem's light,
Make clear to us how, from that holy night,
Shepherds returned,
Glorying, and giving to God all praise
For what their eyes had seen and ears had heard,
And Wisemen homeward took divergent ways,
To bear triumphant tidings of the Word.
