[Original testimony in German]
In the year 1916, I had to undergo a serious operation...
In the year 1916, I had to undergo a serious operation for a suppurating appendix, and seemed unable to rally from it. I lay in the hospital for three months, and there was no improvement in sight. I was very weak, and suffered day and night from severe backache and fever. My dear mother, being greatly worried about me, inquired of the head physician whether there might be complications in my case, and begged him to give me a thorough examination. He replied negatively, saying that this was all due to the serious operation, and comforted her with the words that we must have patience; but to allay my mother's fears he agreed to examine me.
When she called for the verdict the next day he told her in a very businesslike tone that I had suppuration of the pleura and must undergo another operation immediately. I came through the second operation; but weeks and months passed, until I had been in bed, lying in the same position, for nine months, while the difficulty still continued. Finally I became very weak and apathetic and took no interest in life. My mother noticed this with grief and worry, and asked the doctor for an explanation. To her great alarm he said that he regretted to inform her that he was at the end of his resources; that I was entirely tubercular, and could not be saved.
This was a desperately hard verdict for my mother to bear, but she did not lose her faith in the help of God. And God heard her prayer; for the same day an acquaintance told her of Christian Science and its blessings. On her next visit my mother told me about Christian Science, and I felt so much confidence in it that I could hardly wait until the practitioner came. In compliance with my request the lady took up the work at once. She assured me that God was my health, my strength, and my life; and I clung to this truth. I took no more medicine, trusting only in God and His help. I looked forward with joy to every visit of the dear practitioner, for I felt a new sense of life when she was there. My condition improved, with the help of God; and although progress was made but slowly, each day showed some advancement. After about two months' treatment I could leave my bed. The nurses were astonished and glad; and the doctor told me that a wonder had been performed in my case. Shortly after that I was able to leave the hospital.
