There is nothing baffling, obscure, or mysterious about Christian Science. Therefore, the statement made by a clergyman, as reported in a recent issue, wherein he referred to Christian Scientists "as mystics in religion," is entirely without foundation or fact. Spiritual healing was a mystery to the Pharisees when the Master dwelt among men. They were in a proud self-righteousness, at variance with the theology of Christ Jesus and, not understanding, condemned it. Nevertheless, this theology which Jesus taught and practiced, embracing the true concept of God as ever present good, and of man's eternal harmonious relationship to Him, enabled the Master to heal the sick, comfort the sorrowing. reform the sinner, and raise the dead. Jesus' theology likewise enabled the disciples to repeat, not alone their Master's words, but also his wonderful works. Furthermore, Christian Scientists to-day, not having faith without works, are daily endeavoring to have in them that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," and are accomplishing much in the destruction of sin, sorrow, lack, and disease, for themselves and for those who seek their help. Thus the practice of Christian Science, instead of being mysterious, is simply the fulfillment in this age of Jesus' promise that certain definite signs should follow them that really believe (understand) the truth of Being. (See Mark 16, verses 17 and 18.)
Correcting another reference made by the reverend gentleman, I would state that Christian Scientists do not divide the supreme authority of the Bible with any one or anything. To confirm this averment, the first of the six religious tenets of Christian Science, found on page 497 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is quoted: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."
