My mother's healing, more than thirty years ago, while reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, after she had "suffered many things of many physicians," first interested our family in the healing efficacy of Christian Science. The first benefit I consciously received from Christian Science was the overcoming of an antipathy to a high school teacher that threatened to prevent my finishing school. My mother talked the matter over with a practitioner, and the result was the establishment of a very pleasant relationship between the teacher and me.
However, I did not accept Christian Science at that time, nor for eight years afterward. It was in January, 1898, while I was suffering from an acute attack of influenza, that a loving Christian Scientist took me to her home, where I was instantaneously healed of an hereditary claim of sensitive feet, a cough of thirteen years' standing (supposed to have been inherited), and a predisposition to take cold. At the same time an hereditary supersensitive disposition was uncovered as selfishness, self-pity, and self-consciousness,—a belief in a selfhood apart from divine Love, which, through the years, has been largely overcome. With these healings came an earnest desire to know the truth and to do for others what had been done for me; and from that hour I have striven to get the understanding and to demonstrate it to bless all concerned.
The religion of Love appealed to me most; and in every treatment the underlying thought has been the statement in Science and Health (p. 9), "The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of this asking?" During all these years there has been radical reliance on divine Mind to heal all manner of diseases, and this dependence has resulted in a sublime faith in God, with abundant blessings as the reward. Measles, diphtheria, a carbuncle, a broken ankle, influenza, and dengue have yielded instantaneously to the truth. Temperamental traits have been overcome by holding to statements from Science and Health. Cases of slow healing have brought out much patience, compassion, mercy, tenderness, and God's infinite provision and protection have been realized. In meeting a request from a drunkard to be healed through Christian Science, I studied the passage on page 406 of Science and Health beginning with line 28; and the earnest desire to be honest and do my part rightly healed me instantaneously of the desire for coffee and tea. This occurred twelve years ago, and I have touched neither since then.
