Ever since I was a youth I have felt that all the medicine...
Ever since I was a youth I have felt that all the medicine in the world, medical art, and human philosophy are powerless as real help and consolation in the hour of need. Only one historical figure seemed to me to possess the power of healing humanity mentally and physically, namely Christ Jesus; but as he was not personally present any more, I found the world and existence in hopeless darkness. What was the use of all the new inventions, all the new religions, when they could not bestow on us any peace within? However, I always found that the following words in the Bible held a ray of hope: "The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
In the year 1906, when I was nineteen years old, I met a German lady here in Sweden, and she began to talk to me about Christian Science, of which I knew nothing. I felt immediately that this must be the truth, the promised Comforter, which we all needed. I started at once to study Christian Science, as I was in deep mental depression and regarded the future as quite hopeless. My work did not interest me, and I did not have any success in it. At last I felt that the problems which I had to solve were too great for me to clear up alone, therefore I turned to a Christian Science practitioner, requesting help. After the first few treatments I felt mentally and physically stronger, a great deal of my fear disappeared, and I began to feel that I was free. Since then Christian Science has been my only physician and religion. I have suffered from appendicitis and from a severe attack of Spanish influenza with high fever; but in both these cases I turned to a Christian Science practitioner and experienced relief within a very short time. I have also obrained new work, which interests me, and which I feel is of more use to my fellow-men. On account of this work I have also received a good income.
It is, therefore, not to be wondered at that I keep to Christian Science. I am deeply grateful for all the mental and physical help I have received; but, above all, I value the understanding of God which Christian Science gives, and which enables us to commence here on earth to live a spiritual life in obedience to Truth and Love.
