I think it is a great privilege, as well as a duty, to testify...

I think it is a great privilege, as well as a duty, to testify to the healing efficacy of God's power, as taught and demonstrated in Christian Science. I have had many proofs of God's care in the past four years.

I wish to express gratitude for a recent healing of smallpox. One Friday morning I was awakened with a severe headache and a high fever. All day I struggled along, but that evening I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. I had treatment again Saturday, and awoke Sunday morning apparently healed. The following Tuesday evening I noticed a slight eruption on one side of my face, but gave it no thought. Wednesday it was more noticeable, so the practitioner was called again. Thursday, in obedience to our Leader's instructions as to contagious diseases, and upon advice of the practitioner, a doctor was called to examine me. Her diagnosis was smallpox; whereupon the Board of Health was notified at once. Three doctors from the Health Bureau called, each making the same statement. "A perfect case of smallpox," they said. Therefore, I was placed in quarantine, to remain for a period of three weeks, according to the state laws.

While I was willing to be obedient, at the same time there was a certain amount of resentment on my part; but when the omnipotence and the omnipresence of divine Love dawned on me, then all thoughts of resentment, isolation, and length of time disappeared. I want to state here that with the exception of the eruption, I was perfectly comfortable during all this time. The following Thursday, at my request, a doctor from the Health Bureau called, and after a most thorough examination found that all material evidences had disappeared; and I was released from quarantine that day, which was the seventh, instead of the twenty-first.
