Please permit me to say that the teaching of Christian Science does not tend to make its adherents easy believers in mystical operations of any kind. In fact, the teaching of this religion stands squarely against mysticism in all of its forms. The scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' day, failing to understand his divine theology, once accused him of practicing a form of mysticism. Speaking of the Master they said, "This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils." Jesus, perceiving that their purpose was to discredit his spiritual teachings, and knowing, too, that many high in ecclesiastical authority practiced and permitted others to practice the mystical and suggestive arts, replied: "And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." This reply not only silenced his accusers, but for all time established a clear distinction between healing by means of spiritual understanding and all occult methods by whatever name they may be called. This distinction, I may add, is exactly what the critics of Christian Science fail to understand.
