Business Qualities

Christian Science teaches that the only real business there is, is the Father's business, and that each one must be about it if he would transact business in the true sense. In this connection it is often asked: How can I be "about my Father's business," and still make steel, hats, shoes, or sell ribbons, or build bridges? Where is there any point of contact between these and the Father's business?

Let us see of what true business consists. Is it not the activity of good, the expressing of right ideas or right mental qualities? Then first we must build in our consciousness the true business structure, which must be of such qualities as honesty, integrity, unselfishness, straightforward cooperation with our fellow-men, truthfulness, kindness, consideration, and the like. Thus we shall establish the desire to follow the Bible instruction to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. These qualities comprise the foundation and framework of the structure; and upon it we continue to build our superstructure, whatever it may call itself, for the special activity we may be engaged in is but an opportunity to express these divine qualities.

Then some one may say, Yes, but money must enter into my negotiations, and the Bible teaches that "the love of money is the root of all evil." True, the love of money for money's sake, or solely for the material things it may bring! But when it is taken to mean an agency of exchange or "love currency" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 14), then it becomes something that must be kept in circulation.
