I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, but because it appealed to me as the right religion, and because I knew it was the truth by the peace and joy it brought into my life. We have had, in our family of five, many physical healings. Our three children, aged twenty, fifteen, and eleven, do not know anything about material remedies, as we have always relied on the truth to overcome all ills. They have been very sick several times, but the troubles were overcome quickly by Christian Science treatment.
Once I sprained my ankle very badly. This happened in the afternoon, and by bedtime I could not walk on the foot at all. I asked for Christian Science treatment, and the next morning I walked and did all my housework. It never troubled me any more. Another time, our little girl's clothing caught fire, and while I was trying to extinguish the flames my hands were very badly burned and on the palms were great blisters. In ten days the hands were completely healed, without any scars.
But the most wonderful healing came to me five years ago during the influenza epidemic. I was taken with this trouble, and though I was very well cared for throughout the whole experience by Christian Science treatment, the disease was not overcome for two weeks, and I was at the door of death when the healing took place. It seemed to me that a great burden was rolled away and the light shone forth; and I knew I was healed. The beautiful hymn which begins
"Our God is Love, unchanging Love,
And can we ask for more?"
came to my thought, and I began to sing it, though I had seemed hardly able to breathe before this. In two days I was up and ate heartily of everything. In about a week I seemed to take another cold and relapsed with all the symptoms of pneumonia. This was quickly overcome and I gained steadily; though it was some time before I was entirely healed, as the lungs were in a very serious condition. I shall never cease to be grateful for this healing, as it lifted me from death into life; and I am trying to show my gratitude by living this beautiful truth and giving it to my fellow-men.
I am more grateful each day to God and to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for giving us this wonderful truth. I am deeply grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in one of its branches; for class instruction; and for the literature, which is meeting our needs. I am grateful for the loving teacher and practitioner who have helped me over so many rough places.
(Mrs.) Maggie H. Johnson, El Dorado, Arkansas.
About seventeen or eighteen years ago I was laid upon a bed of pain almost completely paralyzed. This condition was brought about by the excessive use of alcoholic beverages. Also, at the same time a severe case of pneumonia manifested itself; so it will be readily seen that my physical condition was at a very low ebb.
The truth as taught in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was brought to me by a very kind neighbor, and it at once appealed strongly to me. I began to study it, and with the help of a loving practitioner was soon on my way to recovery. The healing of this condition was not instantaneous, as it was more than a year before I was entirely healed. The appetite for strong drink was completely destroyed at the same time.
I want to tell of another beautiful healing I experienced. About eleven years ago chills and fever presented themselves. I worked in Science for about seven weeks for this healing without success. I then made a trip of about one hundred miles to get help from a practitioner. The inharmonious condition was immediately overcome, and I have had no return of it since.
We have had in our family many other healings. I am very grateful to God for these healings; also to Mrs. Eddy, who restored to us this great truth which Christ Jesus taught while on earth. The spiritual enlightenment that I have received through the study of Christian Science means very much to me. The literature is a great comfort, and I am very grateful for it.
Frank W. Johnson, El Dorado, Arkansas.
