To those who have not looked deeply into the teaching of Christian Science, who do not yet comprehend the nature of God as divine Mind, and have not experienced any of the wonderful results of the application of its divine Principle to false human beliefs, it may seem that the so-called human mind is used to bring about these results; but to Christian Scientists it is beyond question that it is the spirit of God—available at all times and under all circumstances—and the understanding and application of God's spiritual laws which produce these results. The human mind is not a factor in true healing at all. The belief in the power of the human mind or will is an effectual preventive of the practice of Christianity, and, therefore, of Christian Science. Jesus stated for all time the means whereby individuals could heal themselves and others when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." It is the truth about God, man, and the universe understood and applied that destroys the errors of the human mind made manifest as sin, disease, and death. If a child believes that twice two is five it is not necessary for his teacher to hypnotize him in order to heal him of that belief. He declares the truth about it, and brings home that truth to the child, and the false belief disappears into its native nothingness. In the same way those educated spiritually know and declare and apply spiritual truths to false human beliefs, and destroy them, thus freeing individuals from sin, sickness, and other inharmonious conditions which they had previously believed to be real. Beginning on page 181 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Any hypnotic power you may exercise will diminish your ability to become a Scientist, and vice versa. The act of healing the sick through divine Mind alone, of casting out error with Truth, shows your position as a Christian Scientist."
