"Truth is affirmative"

On page 418 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy makes a far-reaching and helpful statement. "Truth is affirmative, and confers harmony," she says. "All metaphysical logic is inspired by this simple rule of Truth, which governs all reality." Then, immediately thereafter, in one of those inspired sentences with which her writings abound, she indicates how spiritual truth can be utilized in healing the sick. The sentence runs, "By the truthful arguments you employ, and especially by the spirit of Truth and Love which you entertain, you will heal the sick."

Now, Truth is a synonym used in Christian Science for God. God is infinite Truth; and God is good. Hence the expression of Truth—that is, the whole of spiritual creation—must be harmonious. Whatever the problem to be handled in Christian Science, these fundamental truths must be understood and affirmed until they are demonstrated. The argument to be employed must be based on knowledge of Truth; and if it be made by thought inspired by the "spirit of Truth and Love," the sick and sinning are bound to be healed.

Perhaps it needs to be pointed out to the beginner that Christian Science looks upon evil—sin and all its consequences, disease and all its effects—entirely differently from the generally accepted beliefs concerning it. What does Christian Science say about evil? It declares it to be unreal. This affirmative declaration is a statement of fact deduced from the truth that God is infinite good. Whatever the so-called human mind may say to the contrary, the truth remains; and no denial of it can alter or annul it in any degree. Once let the position be apprehended by any one believing in, and suffering in consequence from, some form of evil, and his problem will then present itself to him in a very different light from what it did. He will no longer look upon it as unsolvable; he will no longer have the same fear with regard to it. If wise, he will at once proceed to destroy the false beliefs which are binding him, by affirming the truths of being, continuing to do so until he gets such a clear realization of these truths that the evil beliefs are obliterated from his thought. Christ Jesus' words "to those Jews which believed on him," "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," will have been verified in his experience.
