A few years ago, when our little one was expected, the medical practitioner attending asserted that the birth would be delayed, dangerous, and perhaps fatal. On presenting a "wire" to the post office for dispatch to a Christian Science practitioner, I was told it would be sent at once if the contents seemed to be "of sufficient importance." Promptly came the suggestion to reply that it was a matter of life and death, but this temptation was quite spontaneously met and overcome by the recognition of God as the only Life, omnipresent, and the whole matter was entrusted to "the operation of divine Principle," as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. xi). Arriving home, I found the child being delivered naturally and quickly. The mother was soon about again, and the little girl was and is strong and healthy. The doctor, a kindly man, doing his best to help humanity according to his understanding, was very much delighted with the result, which he ascribes entirely to Christian Science, saying he "had nothing to do with it."

Words are inadequate to express the gratitude one feels for the health, assurance, joy, and peace which become increasingly ours through the persevering study and practice of this wonderful truth, as revealed by Mrs. Eddy in her writings. One night our daughter awoke, apparently attacked with croup. At once a Christian Science practitioner was called, the truth declared, and the child instantly healed.

I myself also have experienced the relief and joy of instantaneous healing in the same way. At other times, this experience has come through the prayerful study of certain passages in Science and Health; and it was while reading this book, alone and for the first time, some eleven years ago, that I received instant and permanent relief from a complaint which was making life a burden. Other troubles of sin and disease, for I was formerly one of those possessed with many devils (or fears), it has seemed to require longer time and more effort to overcome; but in these cases the seemingly slow healing has been the means of learning some valuable lessons, for which, and for the loving wisdom and patience exercised by others in my behalf, the only fitting expression of gratitude is a more consecrated life.
