The following is "the scientific statement of being" as found on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which clearly and correctly sets forth the teachings of Christian Science with regard to Mind and matter: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

In Christian Science Soul is understood to be God. Therefore it teaches that the true substance or Soul of the spiritual man is God, of which man is the image and likeness, as is recorded in the first chapter of Genesis, where we read: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."

The many healings that have taken place through the demonstration of Christian Science are rightly termed "spiritual healings," and should not be confused with the critic's concept of "mental healing," if by this term is meant the influence of the mortal, human, or carnal mind over the body. Healing in Christian Science is brought about only through the operation of the divine Mind or divine Principle,—God,—spoken of by Paul as that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." Christian Science recognizes God as all-powerful, and seeks only His infinite power, presence, and knowledge in the healing or destruction of all forms of sin and disease.
