Knowledge

Habakkuk, the prophet, says, "The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 127), we read, "If God, the All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including man, then everything entitled to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God, for there can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity." It behooves us as Christian Scientists earnestly to consider what knowledge in its spiritual sense really is, what its true source, how we can attain it, and thus help to bring about the ultimate fulfillment of the above-quoted prophecy.

The teachings of Scripture and of Christian Science are both perfectly plain and comprehensive, showing that all knowledge is from God, and is reflected in the consciousness of His children, where it brings forth fruit. The divine fount is open to all. All may partake, be satisfied, and go their way rejoicing. Solomon said of knowledge, "If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God;" and Jesus said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

How can we gain the knowledge of God as Love, and consequently as our helper and defender? Just how do we gain a working knowledge of mathematics? Is it not by learning and proving its rules? To be sure, we may study books on mathematics, and memorize every rule contained therein; but our knowledge becomes reliable only after we have demonstrated in our own experience that its laws are true and infallible. Even so in Christian Science,—we may read Science and Health from cover to cover, and yet not have the saving knowledge of God. We may believe it all; but belief must become spiritual understanding, confirmed through proof, or demonstration. This is the only way into the fold of peace and harmony.
