Truth, the Alterative

Mrs. Eddy never doubted the power of Truth after her discovery of Christian Science. For many years she had searched the Scriptures for the truth about God and His law; and when at last the revelation of Christian Science came to her, and she was healed of what had been considered by a physician to be an incurable condition, her faith in God, her trust in Truth, became so strong that she was able to heal many others after the manner of her own spiritual healing. Accordingly, she could write in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 371), "Truth is an alterative in the entire system, and can make it 'every whit whole.'" No idle words these, but brimful of truth, carrying comfort and the promise of healing to every sick and sorrowing one on earth to-day.

After Mrs. Eddy discovered the law whereby Truth heals and proved its power in her own case and that of others, she gave her discovery to the world in the Christian Science textbook. It took tremendous courage to do this, since the world was openly skeptical of almost everything but its own material theories and methods. At the time of the discovery of Christian Science in 1866, the world was entering upon an unparalleled era of research and discovery in what is called natural science. Everybody is familiar with the advance that has been made in the last half century in, for example, engineering, mechanics, physics, and chemistry. The advances made in these branches of human knowledge have been almost incalculable, revolutionizing, as they have, modern life along many lines—but always materially. All the while Christian Science has been teaching mankind—what? Not about so-called matter; not about the so-called laws of matter; not about the application of matter's hypothetical laws of the healing of disease. Christian Science has, instead, been educating mankind as to the true nature of God and His perfect creation. And as the truth has been understood, it has healed the sick and cleansed the sinner.

Christ Jesus used spiritual truth to heal disease and sin, to destroy all kinds of evil beliefs, radically and quickly. The record of his healings is contained in the four gospels of the New Testament. As one reads the accounts of the miracles or wonders he performed, one is struck by the fact that the truth, as realized by the Master, at once acted as an alterative. It is perfectly certain that he expected the results; that he was sure they would follow. And knowing the necessity for faith in the power of spiritual understanding to heal, he more than once emphasized its superlative value. On one occasion he said to his disciples: "Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith." Faith must always accompany spiritual understanding. If established on the foundation of absolute Truth, it is irresistible in the destruction of every erroneous belief.
