In 1910, I was in the depths of fear, doubt, and discouragement, for during several years previously we had had almost continuous medical attention, including eight surgical operations, in our little family. Christian Science very quickly dispelled much of the fear and discouragement through its glorious revelation of God as Love.

The first physical healing through Christian Science in our family was the case of our eldest daughter, then ten years old, who had been seriously ill with pneumonia. In three days after a practitioner had been called upon for help, she was entirely well. This child had for some years worn glasses for badly crossed eyes and defective sight. Leading specialists explained that she had the sight of a person eighty years old, and that it could not be improved. However, the sight became normal in every respect; and the glasses were discarded a few weeks after her healing of pneumonia. The practitioner had explained to her that sight is spiritual and that perfection is the birthright of all God's children. This truth she had applied with childlike faith; and the wonderful result brought joy and confidence to all of us. I may add that this healing, which could not be explained away, led a large number of relatives and acquaintances to investigate Christian Science for themselves; and many of them have since been healed of various kinds of sickness and discord.

Just before we heard of Christian Science, a younger daughter had been terribly scalded. Her nervous system was badly affected, and she could not stand up straight. Through the understanding of God's law that came through my early study of Christian Science, she was soon restored to normal strength and health. About the same time, largely by overcoming fear through applying my understanding of the truth, I was able to relieve our little son of an obstruction in the nose, which the school physician had said would require an operation.
