While all other methods of healing are admittedly empirical, Christian Science is positive in its statements. It is positive because it is based on the Bible. Jesus never minced words by making concessions to material methods or theories of healing or to what Paul calls the "carnal mind." Jesus knew the truth, which he both lived and taught; and he declared, "Ye shall know the truth"—not guess at it. John declared in his epistle, "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding." Is it not strange, then, and a sad commentary on our times, that to-day there are thousands of people spending their time and money in an almost frantic endeavor to discover the secret of health and of successful living, while almost completely ignoring the Bible?

Directing one, as it does, to "search the scriptures," Christian Science points the way out of all this confusion of mortal thinking. It turns away from the ever changing and shifting evidence of the physical senses for proof or information as to what man is. It bids us look instead to God, who is Spirit, who made man in His image and likeness, and who promised him dominion over the earth, which must include dominion over sickness. Thus the only answer to the question, Why are you sick? is to be found in turning to God, which "is the beginning of wisdom."

Mary Baker Eddy, through patient study of the Bible and consecrated prayer, discovered the true nature of disease; and she has given us the true answer to the question, Why are you sick? in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where on page 392 she says: "If you think that consumption is hereditary in your family, you are liable to the development of that thought in the form of what is termed pulmonary disease, unless Science shows you otherwise. If you decide that climate or atmosphere is unhealthy, it will be so to you. Your decisions will master you, whichever direction they take. Reverse the case. Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously." And on page 233 she says, "Ye who can discern the face of the sky,—the sign material,—how much more should ye discern the sign mental, and compass the destruction of sin and sickness by overcoming the thoughts which produce them, and by understanding the spiritual idea which corrects and destroys them."
