No Separation from God

Perhaps there is nothing more precious in all the teaching of Christian Science than its presentation of the fact that there is no possibility of separation from God. This truth Christian Science explains and emphasizes in such a multitude of ways that no one can read its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, without being impressed with this comforting assurance. To be sure, the omnipresence of God has been preached for ages. Jeremiah proclaimed Him as saying: "Am I a God at hand, ... and not a God afar off? ... Do not I fill heaven and earth?" And David declared that whether he were in heaven or hell he would still be able to recognize God's hand leading him.

In spite, however, of the almost universal teaching of the omnipresence of God, men have for centuries failed to understand how to make that omnipresence available, and have cried out again and again, as did Job, "Oh that I knew where I might find him!" It remained for Christian Science to open the door to His presence in such a way that whatever the seeming circumstance, however desperate the apparent difficulty, the way is now revealed whereby we not only may believe that our God is omnipresent, but may prove it through the demonstration of His omnipotence.

And how is this to be done? When Christian Science teaches that we are to "cling steadfastly to God and His idea" (Science and Health, p. 495), it does so in confirmation of Paul's instruction, "These things I will that thou affirm constantly." What a simple rule this is! To affirm that God, infinite good, is present! That He can never be away, but is ever at hand! To know, as Christian Science teaches, that this very declaration is only possible because God Himself, as divine Mind, is revealing this truth to the one so declaring! That such affirming is under His law, and that His law is operating with every word thus declared! That such clinging "to God and His idea" brings the consciousness of His presence! Why is this so? Because His omnipresence is the veritable truth of being, and such affirmation is the unfolding of that truth.
