[Written for the Sentinel]

Emerging

If I could think divinely,
I'd lift my thoughts above
The clutch of clay, the thrust of hate,

And mount to heights where Love
Would hold my soul in safety;

Nor ever earthward sink.
Joy would be mine, if only
I could divinely think.

When I shall think divinely—
Oh, happy, happy hour!
My fellow-beings I shall serve
With Love's reflected power.
I'll bid the parched wanderer
The living waters drink,
When, e'en in desert fastnesses,
I shall divinely think.

Now, I must think divinely.
God's kingdom is at hand;
"Lo! I am with you alway!"
Christ's promise e'er shall stand.
From "Be ye therefore perfect,"
I must divinely think;
Must rise, and claim my birthright.
I must divinely think;
To-day, divinely think.
