Although I was very much in need of physical healing...
Although I was very much in need of physical healing at the time I began the study of Christian Science (which was about nine years ago), I did not know that it healed physical disease. A friend introduced the subject to me in a manner that caused me to think it would be interesting to study. And so it was; for before I had finished reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the first time, I was healed of stomach trouble, catarrh, and weak lungs. The last-named trouble was the result of a series of colds which I had regularly each springtime, before I learned that health is not governed by the conditions of the weather. Christian Science has healed me of the tobacco habit also. I began using tobacco at the age of twelve years, and used it until Science delivered me from that phase of bondage.
Another comforting experience is the influx of understanding that Christian Science brings, for it forces us to search out the real meaning of words. In this way science has been a great benefit to me. For example, before I began to study the teachings of Christian Science, when I opened the door of thought to the word "salvation," fear and dread both entered.
As I review past days, I am reminded of much benefit received through friends, in that they gave me the advantage of their knowledge and experience concerning Christian Science. Now if I tell you I am thankful to God for all this, and grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her patient labor; that I appreciate all these friends who have so kindly helped me, but that still I do not live up to my highest understanding of this teaching; what have I proved myself to be? Therefore I say, Judge the tree by its fruit. May I learn speedily how to "judge righteous judgment."
