[Written for the Sentinel]

The Better Way

Pledged to good intentions, secret though they be,
Mindful of the pitfalls day by day,
Ready with forgiveness, if a fault you see,—
Is not this, indeed, the better way?

Lending timely counsel to a friend in need,
Asking not the question, Does it pay?
Should your help prove thankless, must you give it heed?
Surely not; Love finds a better way.

Things have not gone smoothly, just the way they ought!
Why this is, 'tis rather hard to say.
Test it, look within, and clarify your thought;
You may not yet have found the better way.
