Christ Jesus never recommended any "temporal means of healing;" and he was "the way." He used the spiritual means God had placed at his disposal; and he said to every follower: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature;" "Heal the sick;" "Love thy neighbour as thyself." These commands were given, not only to the twelve, but to the seventy also; and it is a notable fact that healing was an essential part of primitive Christianity for over two hundred years after the crucifixion. By what authority, either in the Bible or elsewhere, does our critic say that divine healing was limited to the twelve disciples and a few others, when Jesus himself said, "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; ... they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover"? Christian Science is daily healing all manner of sickness and sin through spiritual understanding, which is both scientific and Christian. If a Christian Scientist should fail in a single case of healing, it is not the fault of this Science, but of insufficient understanding of God.
