Some years ago, before coming into Christian Science, I...

Some years ago, before coming into Christian Science, I passed through the experience of a serious railroad accident, with severe results attending. Belonging to a family two members of which followed the medical profession, I was under the material thought entirely, and was subjected to all manner of material remedies and treatments; and finally was pronounced incurable from heart disease. For some years I suffered greatly, and seemed to find no relief. The removal to a distant city followed; and there Christian Science was brought to my discouraged thought, and I commenced quietly to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, without the knowledge of my family. After a few months of earnest study, it seemed right to tell them of my interest in Christian Science; and when I told them, and convinced them of my improved physical condition, one member of the family insisted upon a physical examination. I submitted, and to the amazement of all, the specialist could find absolutely no sign of valvular disorder in the heart, but pronounced it sound and whole.

Some years later, when a severe epidemic was raging all over the country and in the camps where our soldier boys were preparing for overseas service, our little daughter and I seemed to come under this same dread disease; and we were very ill, especially the child, who had what was called "sleeping sickness." At this time also, Christian Science was our sole reliance; and the loving help given then brought us the peace and joy of work well done, and a deeper realization that God is a very present help in trouble, and that He always gives us rest from our burdens, however heavy they may seem.

We are especially grateful for the sweetness and protection Christian Science gives to the children. When our little girl was about three and one half years old, we were living in a large city where airplanes were quite commonly used. The child seemed to have a sense of fear when hearing the noise of the planes. One day she was playing alone upstairs, and hearing an approaching plane, she came downstairs saying out loud at every step, "God will take care of me, God will take care of me;" and her fear left her there, so that after that airplanes were a great delight to her.
