In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is this statement (p. 275): "No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows." I find this to be absolutely true, and a truth that children can understand. At first, it did not seem easy to grasp the spiritual fact that God is both Father and Mother. I was willing for Him to be Father, but not Mother. But one night I proved to my own satisfaction that He is both Father and Mother.

My little girl, then six years of age, seemed very sick with a high fever, and at times was delirious. She was very much afraid of things she thought she saw, and clung to me, until I felt the sense of human love and fear was shutting out the thought of God's presence, as I longed to hold her in my own arms and assure her that mamma was present. At last I said to her, "You know mamma loves you?" She replied, "Oh, yes, mamma." "Then listen, dear. God is your real Father-Mother, and He loves you. Now lie down and close your eyes, and be very still, and just know that Love's arms are round about you, holding you close to Him. Mamma will wait until you feel sure Love is with you, then I will go to my room and leave you with Love; and Love will heal you." She closed her eyes and lay very still. In a few moments a sweet smile stole over her face, and without opening her eyes, she whispered: "You may go now, mamma; my Father-Mother God is here."

I went quietly to my room, very much awed as I realized God's power to make His presence known as Mother-Love. A little later I went into the room and found the child in a heavy perspiration and sleeping quietly. I stole softly back to my room, fully expecting to lie down just for a little while and then return to see how she was; but after lying down I remembered nothing more, and in the morning I was awakened by a little hand patting my cheek. I opened my eyes to find a face radiant with health and happiness bending over mine. "O mamma," she said, "I had such a nice dream. God talked to me, and He said if I would have only good thoughts, that He would let me lead people out of darkness into light." I had never seen her so joyful over a material gift as she was over the fact that God talked to her.
