About fourteen years ago, my dear wife presented me...
About fourteen years ago, my dear wife presented me with a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had always read a great deal, but put off reading this book until one Sunday, after reading the papers, when I took it up and read the whole chapter on Prayer. This chapter appealed to me, and what impressed me the most was Mrs. Eddy's spiritual sense of the Lord's Prayer. The next morning before going to business I looked for my spectacles, which I had used from morning until night for a few years, and to my surprise found that I had misplaced them. I had no time to search for them, but found that I did not need them, for I was seeing clearer and better than I had seen with them on. I have never used glasses since. I thank God for Mrs. Eddy, who has given us Christian Science.
I rather reluctantly accompanied my wife to The Mother Church one evening, and it was not long before I became a regular attendant. The congregation seemed such a happy and loving one; and one thing that pleased me most was the announcement from the desk by the First Reader that "the Bible and the Christian Science textbook are our only preachers" (Quarterly, p. 2). This was so entirely different from the churches which I had formerly attended. I had previously considered Christian Scientists queer people, who worshiped Mrs. Eddy; but after reading "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur my views were entirely changed.
For a number of years it was my daily habit to smoke a pipe and cigars. I continued to read Science and Health, and without using will-power or trying to overcome this selfish and depraved appetite I found that the desire for tobacco had left me. The sense of pleasure in sin was destroyed, and I was truly reformed through the renewing of my mind. I did not lose anything, but I gained the knowledge that all real pleasure is spiritual and that sin confers no pleasure.
