About seventeen years ago my husband was very sick with myelitis (inflammation of the spinal cord or bone marrow). The best doctors of various schools were consulted, but the trouble continued to get worse. When several complications set in, a delicate operation was performed in one of the most famous hospitals in Philadelphia; but it brought no relief.

At that time we heard of Christian Science through a dear sister, who had shortly before been healed by it. My husband left it to me to ask for help in Christian Science; but I could not readily bring myself to do so, as I could not understand how a sick body could be healed by the prayer of Christian Science, when all our sincere prayers had not brought the longed-for help. I was brought up in the teachings of the Evangelical church, and had always been told by my dear mother to turn to God for help in every difficulty, which I did; but not until I understood a little of the teachings of Christian Science did I comprehend why even our earnest prayers were seldom heard. Then, when a distinguished physician told me he considered it his duty to inform me that my husband could live but a short time, as all known remedies had been applied without success, I felt impelled to ask a practitioner for help in Christian Science; and it was lovingly given. Although I did not expect improvement, I must say that my husband was healed from this sickness in a very short time; and only then did I begin to be interested in this teaching.

Although I could hardly read English at that time,—and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" had not then been translated into German,—I began to study the textbook industriously, with the help of a dictionary, translating it to the other members of the family. Laboriously I continued; and, thanks to the encouraging words of the dear practitioner, I gradually learned to understand.
