For more than ten years Christian Science has been the only remedy in our family of seven for all kinds of ills. I well remember my first healing. It was in the spring of 1912. I was filling a glass jar with water from the kettle, not thinking or knowing how hot it was. The jar burst, spilling the boiling water over my hand. At that time a dear relative who is a Christian Scientist was staying with us. In great distress I went to him for help, with the result that in a short time the pain stopped. It surprised me most that I could put my hand in hot water without any sensation at all, although there was a sore on one of the fingers. This healed in a short time, without a scar.
When our youngest child was only four weeks old, the older children became ill with whooping cough. In a few days the baby also commenced to cough. Soon he was very sick and could not take nourishment without choking. My husband called a physician, who gave him some medicine to ease the cough, but said he could do nothing else, predicting that the baby would die in convulsions. A great weight seemed to fall from me at hearing this verdict, since then I was free to rely entirely on Christian Science. I told my husband to throw out the medicine. This he willingly did, and then walked back to town to call by telephone a Christian Science practitioner and ask for absent treatment. This was Sunday night; but not before the following Thursday was there any sign of recovery or relief. On that day The Christian Science Monitor came, containing an article entitled, "Answer to Prayer." In reading it all fear left me; and the baby was healed. This boy, now nine years old, has never been sick since, and is a fine, intelligent lad, already in the fifth grade in school.
The older children have been healed of goiter, and of various minor ailments. Protection from accident was also realized for my husband a few years ago, when he was hauling poles down a very steep road. A pole became loosened and shot forward, striking him on the head and knocking him off the load. The workmen standing by were surprised at seeing him rise without any help and drive on. That week the Golden Text for the Lesson-Sermon was the passage from the thirty-sixth psalm: "O Lord, thou preservest man and beast." That sentence had been continually in my thought; so, when I was told of the occurrence, I was sure that God is the true preserver of man.
