Six years ago, while spending the winter on the western...
Six years ago, while spending the winter on the western coast, I heard much about Christian Science and had many kind invitations to attend the services. These I declined on the pretext that I was not interested. However, the seed of Truth had been planted, and when I returned home I went to a Christian Science reading room to inquire about the services, that I might attend. The librarian said she was happy to know I was interested. I said I was not interested, there were so many things wrong with Christian Science. I had not read any of the literature, but I volunteered some of my opinions about it. I was quite surprised that she did not defend her religion in anger and with words, but she sat for a few moments so calm and undisturbed I began to wonder. Presently she said, "We have such a wonderful Church Manual, I would like you to read it; and in this Manual Mrs. Eddy has given us such a helpful prayer which would be nice for you to learn." I will never forget how lovingly she spoke. I took the Manual home, read it through, and learned the prayer. I kept the book for about a month, and each day the prayer was in my thought almost constantly.
For several years prior to this time I had been ill, more or less, with a pain in my side. Physicians had not been able to heal this, although one had prescribed a drug which gave temporary relief; but I was not to take one drop more than was necessary. The fear of the drug and the pain, combined with the suffering, was quite disturbing. A short time after I had returned the book it came to me quite suddenly that my side felt so differently, and I realized I was healed. Not understanding Christian Science, my gratitude was for the release from suffering. In later years, after much study rewarded by some understanding, this healing has helped me to see in what a calm and unlabored way God's work is done,—just as calmly as light dispelling darkness.
I am also grateful for the healing of my daughter of tubercular glands of the throat. We were spending the winter in the West, on the recommendation of a physician, as a last resort. This, needless to say, did not help her. Thus ended five years of incessant effort and application of materia medica. After the antagonism in my consciousness had been healed, a loving neighbor began Christian Science treatment for her. It took about eight months to effect the healing, but it was complete, and has been permanent. Today, at the age of sixteen, she is a healthy, normal girl.
