Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
Baker (Ore.) Herald
Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" on page 450, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death;" but in doing what he can to overcome and destroy these enemies of mankind we neither consider it necessary, profitable, nor Christlike to abuse and vilify. With malice toward none and charity toward all,—whether they agree with him or not,—his aim is not to injure but to bless. Christian Scientists have nothing to fear or to be ashamed of in an honest, open discussion of the subject, for they have abundant "reason of the hope" that is in them.
The followers of Mrs. Eddy know full well how futile it is to try to convince any one who is not open-minded enough to receive their message "as a little child;" for they realize that "none are so blind as those who will not see." But to those who do have ears to hear and eyes to see, to high and low alike, Christian Science appeals because of its irrefutable logic, founded as it is upon the teachings of the master Christian, and interpreting the Scriptures wholly from a spiritual standpoint. Thus interpreted and explained the Bible is found to be understandable, consistent throughout, and wonderfully helpful in a practical way in our everyday problems. Viewed from a similar standpoint,—the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures,—Mrs. Eddy's writings are seen to support and explain the Bible and not to be inconsistent with it. Thousands of intelligent and humble seekers for Truth have found healing of both disease and sin by reading Science and Health but once, and many by reading only one chapter, the chapter on Prayer. Much of the opposition to Christian Science is due to ignorance and failure to comprehend it, for if understood and practiced, it would be recognized as the "pearl of great price."
Christian Science is not, as has been asserted, a "philosophy of the dark days of Hinduism." It is what it claims to be, and nothing else. The word "science" is defined as "knowledge of principles or facts." Christian Science is "Science" because it is knowledge of exact spiritual law, of spiritual truth, the truth about God, man, and the universe. It is "Christian" because it is based upon and follows the teachings of Jesus the Christ. It is to-day restoring primitive Christianity in the way of God's appointing, by healing the sick as well as the sinning and sorrowing.
