Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Some years ago I was suffering from what the doctors called fibroid tumors, which they said were of ten years' growth, and that I had had them since a young child. Several specialists were called. They agreed my only hope lay in a severe operation, which must be performed just as soon as they could get me into a condition where I could be moved to a hospital. Days passed, and their earnest efforts to get me into a condition where they dared to move me, or attempt an operation, were futile; every day I grew worse under their treatment. Several different kinds of treatment were tried, but to no avail.
After three or four weeks of kind and patient work on the part of the doctors, a final consultation was held, and they told my family they had done all they could; the only thing left to do was to make me as comfortable as possible until the end, which they felt would be within twenty-four hours. A lady who knew of this case called to see me several times, and one day was allowed to speak to one of the doctors, who told her there was no hope. She then persuaded him to allow her to see me, with the result that a Christian Science practitioner was sent for. The latter came to see me at one o'clock in the afternoon, when to all appearances the end was very near. She asked me if I believed in God. I said, "I do." She then said, "Christian Science teaches God is divine Love, and that He is all-powerful." Then she gave me what is known in Christian Science as a silent treatment. For the first time in weeks I began to think about something besides myself and my pain. "Divine Love" were the most beautiful words I had ever heard; and I kept saying them over and over, trying to realize what they meant. They were like wonderful music.
Thinking of the great kindness and love all around me, which had been expressed (the physicians were untiring in their efforts to comfort and relieve me), I realized divine Love would do so much more, and He was all-powerful. Then came the sure realization that God could and would heal me. I fell into a peaceful sleep, the first natural sleep I had had for weeks. At four o'clock that afternoon I awakened free from all pain, with those glorious words "divine Love" ringing in my thought. I arose and dressed, greatly rejoicing; the next morning I went to the practitioner's office to hear more about this wonderful truth.
