In Christian Science the word "error" signifies any thought or phenomenon obviously not in accord with the Mind of Christ. Church history shows that beginning approximately with the reign of the Emperor Constantine, the spiritual significance of the Scripture seemed so lost that theory and dogma substituted the works of redeeming and healing; and the divine Love which Jesus and his immediate followers proved would spiritualize human thought and so destroy sin and heal sickness seemed submerged in the materialism that ensued. The Master, however, declared that the saving and healing power that he exercised was not a peculiar prerogative with which he alone was endowed, but that the truth he taught would remain the truth forever, and if understood and practiced would always heal both sin and sickness. He insisted that these results would prove who did understand his message. "Whether is easier," said he, "to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?"

If our friends would, without prejudice, examine earnestly Mrs. Eddy's message, they would perceive that its sole object is to turn the thoughts of the children again to Him who "forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." They would find, too, that Christian Science cannot properly be classified with any teaching other than the Scripture, for it is the antithesis of all theories based upon the evidence of sensuous observation or experience. It is true there are some who will tear sentences from their context in Christian Science literature and use these to try to prove how opposed they are to Bible doctrine, but this is not honest criticism. The subject needs to be considered as a whole. The Bible, too, needs to be spiritually understood, else it will serve to support any theory one may wish to substantiate.
