For more than fourteen years Christian Science has been...
For more than fourteen years Christian Science has been my only physician, and during this time it has been proved to me, over and over again, that the truth as revealed in Christian Science is indeed, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 236), "the remedy for every woe." As the mother of two little daughters, six and eight years old, I would like to share with all the mothers in the world something of the comfort which Christian Science has been to me in meeting the numerous problems which have come along with the children. First of all, Christian Science has been most efficacious as a preventive of disease; for it has taught us to watch our thoughts, to keep them "so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them" (Miscellany, p. 210). In the exact proportion that we have been able to do this, we have been able to prove its value as a preventive of disease. In times of stress, emergency, or accident we have found it unfailingly heals quickly and permanently.
At one time, when the older child was two years old, she fell a distance of several feet on a broken piece of pottery. Refusing to believe any serious consequences, I picked up the child and instantly declared aloud "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of Science and Health. In less than five minutes the crying and pain were destroyed, but it was apparent that she had been badly bruised and cut. At that time we were living in a boarding house in a strange city, where all those around us were fearful that the child would be scarred for life, so deep was the injury to the face, particularly around the eye. I was led to ask for help from a loving practitioner; and in one treatment I was healed of this fear, for the practitioner left this healing thought with me: All that is real is God and His Christ; nothing can ever mar or scar the Christ-idea. After some weeks of patient clinging to this beautiful thought, the child was entirely freed from every trace of the accident.
At another time our second child, then about four years old, had a fall, and so turned her foot and ankle that the entire leg was limp. Her father picked her up, and as she screamed with pain at once this thought came to me: Because man is an idea of God, he cannot fall, and therefore he cannot be hurt. The child stopped crying, but was unable to walk without limping very badly. A relative had developed, from some unknown cause, a lameness for which every known material aid had been tried to no avail. Remembering this, fear was planted in my thought, and the thought persistently came to me, What if our child should be crippled! I tried earnestly to destroy the fear, but every time I looked at the child there was the apparent lameness. Finally, I realized I must be consistent in my thinking, and instead of seeing the lameness I must thank God every time I saw her for His perfect, upright idea. If I was actually thanking God for this true expression, I could not see the lameness. After nearly ten days I reached the place where I was able to leave her in God's safe and loving care. I never knew just when the lameness disappeared. The healing was complete and permanent.
