About fourteen years ago I went to live with a man and his wife who had just become interested in Christian Science. I was invited to attend The Mother Church services with these people. Previous to this time I was not interested in Christian Science; in fact, I had never heard of it before; but I was interested in no other religion.
Christian Science literature and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, were placed in my room and I took them up occasionally and read them, but could not understand them. A member of the home very patiently and lovingly went through the Lesson-Sermon each day with me, and the Bible became a new and dear book to me. Among the first things that I memorized were the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 16); the twenty-third psalm, and "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of Science and Health.
For years I had smoked from five to six cigars a day, and many nights I smoked a pipe besides. Many things were read to me from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works pertaining to depraved appetites and profanity. I was addicted to the social drink habit, and I always felt it necessary to use it to help transact business, as most men whom I dealt with used it; however, I loved liquor of all sorts and I consumed great quantities of it. I had also used profanity among men; but have not used it for years. I am so grateful to be healed also of the liquor habit; and it seems like a dream that I ever used it. I would not use it again if I never did business.
