It is attributable entirely to Christian Science and its beneficent effects that I am here to give this expression of gratitude to God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to the loving practitioner, who attended me, for my healing. I counted myself a physical and mental wreck and hopeless victim of tobacco and intoxicants. In fact, it was not infrequent, in despondent spells, that the experience of being too depraved to face my my own family would come over me; and after the healing of my wife, when Christian Science was mentioned to me, I laughed at the idea of anything being able to reclaime me; but not so with the tender, charitable practitioner. Within eight or ten days after the first treatment, I passed a saloon without going in to take a drink, the first one I had so passed—when they were open—for years. I feel that that occasion was the first in my life upon which a vision of God's work and holy purpose had ever come to me; and I stopped, there on the sidewalk, and breathed an earnest, devout prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving to the Giver of all good. This was about sixteen years ago; and, while it had been my practice to have both medicine and stimulants with me constantly, I have taken no medicine during, approximately, this length of time, and am entirely free from all the objectionable habits of the character named.

Many, many are the times I pray, "Create in me a clean heart, O God," that I may prove myself worthy of the trust thus bestowed on me, and that I may be able to prove my gratitude, as well as express it.

I thank God for Christian Science, and am also grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who so unselfishly worked for the freedom of mankind. Christian Science has brought such an abundance of good into my life that I can never find words to express my gratitude. I have been changed from a nervous, despondent semi-invalid to a useful, happy woman.

I had been a great sufferer, my difficulty being diagnosed as paralysis of the lower bowel, and kidney trouble. I had been told by my physician, who was always faithful in his efforts to help me, that he could do nothing more than to operate, and would not say what the result would be. I felt at that time that my husband and children needed me; therefore it woudl be best not to have the operation, but stay here and suffer it out. I prayed daily for deliverance, thinking there must be a way to be healed; and a kind friend presented Christian Science to me. I knew nothing for or against it, so was ready to try it. A loving practitioner was called and began treatment at once. I was benefited from the first, but healed slowly. I was grateful for the slow healing, for had I been healed quickly I should probably not have become a student of Christian Science. I also recall a healing that came to me at a church service. On awaking one Sunday morning there seemed a great sense of depression, and I thought it impossible to go. Recognizing the error for what it was, I nevertheless attended. During the Lesson-Sermon I still seemed to be greatly burdened, but when the benediction was read I was healed.

Christian Science opened to me a new life; and out of the depths of doubt and fear it has gently brought to me the peace of mind "which passeth all understanding." It has given me a clearer realization of man's relationship to God, and of the ever-presence of good. May I live the gratitude I feel toward God, Mrs. Eddy, and the one who has helped me to gain a working knowledge of this Science.
