The Lectures
Harrison, Ark. (Society).—The following remarks were made by Mrs. Tina M. Kathary when introducing Judge Samuel W. Greene, a Christian Science lecturer:—
It was typical of the spirit of our Pilgrim Fathers that in the midst of trials and hardships they should be mindful of God's care and protection, and in recognition of their blessings set aside one day of the year which they observed with giving of thanks. While this beautiful custom originated with them, it is notable that years before there was a king who was so conscious of God's power and presence that he frequently invoked his people to "give thanks unto the Lord." One of his edicts, which is to-day a most fitting Thanksgiving proclamation, is found in the one hundred and seventh psalm, where he admonishes his people to look to God for help at all times, instead of waiting until in distress and trouble, and invoking them to give thanks for their many blessings bestowed under divers conditions. One feature of the human mind which exists to-day, as it has through all the intervening years since David's time, is the inclunation to wait until in time of trouble or distress to call upon God, or to be mindful of our blessings. Christian Science is a reinstatement of the religion which David understood,—a religion which makes every day one of thanksgiving. The first line to the Preface of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is (p. vii), "The those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Learning to rely upon the "sustaining infinite," the beginner, or student, of Christian Science, soon proves that God is indeed a very present help in time of trouble, and that now, as in David's time, it is He who healeth our diseases and forgiveth our iniquities. Members of this society gladly testify to healing of sickness, discomfort, and sorrow, and to regenerated lives and minds, but we wish to express our gratitude for our many blessings in some form other than mere words, for we have learned that
