The Lectures
Gary, Ind. (First Church).—Lecturer introduced by W. P. Cottingham, who said in part:—
The word science is defined as "systematized knowledge of any one department of mind or matter; acknowledged truths and laws." Then it follows that systematized knowledge of that department of mind dealing with healing sickness and sin may properly be termed science; and when this is the Christian method of healing taught and practiced by Christ Jesus and by his followers for three hundred years after him, then surely its proper name is Christian Science. Through a knowledge of its truths, its followers are learning to understand God aright, are learning to depend upon His loving care in all times of stress, be it sickness, sorrow, or sin, and are at all times endeavoring to be mindful of the tenets to which they subscribe in joining the church, the last of which states (Science and Health, p. 497), "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure."
