As I was returning this morning from a very pleasant...
As I was returning this morning from a very pleasant hike in the country, the memory of what I love to think of as the sweetest demonstration I have had in Christian Science came to mind, and the desire to share its lessons with others through the medium of the Sentinel also came very strongly. While reading the testimonies of healing in last week's Sentinel the same desire again came to me, and so I trust in giving this testimony it may help others, as it helped me, to see of how much greater importance it is to have even a grain of the spirit than much learning of the letter of Christian Science.
It was the quick healing of the results of a bicycle accident which occurred several years ago. Just previous to the accident, I had begun to perceive that Christian Science was by no means just another church denomination, that it did not rely on the person of any one nor upon forms of church services, but that back of all these outward appearances was a spiritual law, the understanding of which was priceless. This realization changed my entire estimate of Mrs. Eddy's great discovery. Going out into the country for a bicycle ride one Saturday afternoon this beautiful spiritual law seemed very real to me and had I obeyed its marvelous guidance, the accident would not have happened, but the pleasure of the trip caused me to turn a deaf ear to divine care, and so the evening came on, and as I had an engagement in Chicago I was speeding with my head lowered. Almost the next thing I recall was that two men were lifting me off the road on which I had lain for over twenty minutes stunned. After seeing that I was conscious, the men left. I found that the handle bars of the wheel had loosened in their socket and I had been thrown headlong onto a heap of broken stones. Returning to my room I threw myself on the bed and later awakened in pain. I did not even deny the accident, mentally or otherwise, and when Sunday morning came I was certainly in a bad plight, but all the time this spiritual law kept me from fear and I had the feeling that it would take care of me, and in my childlike simplicity I spoke to this grand law, saying, "I don't know who or what you are, but I am in a terrible fix and I will be very grateful if you will help me." In the morning, going to church seemed altogether impossible, but here again this law led me to bind up my bruises and closed eye closed take the train and attend the service. I certainly presented a sorry apperance, but I had learned humility and obedience through suffering. I will not say what mental feelings I had next morning in the office where I worked, surrounded by all the men, who knew I was relying on Christian Science. But through all these ordeals this grand spiritual law took care of me—beside which a human mother's love and care were as nothing—and I had the happiness of attending church the next Sunday without any bandages and with only a few small marks left, and the following Sunday I was perfectly healed.
As a proof of the severity of the fall I will say that for some days I expectorated blood frequently and could scarcely lift my arm from my body. I did the hardest and closest figuring on office books all the week and did not lose an hour from work. The healing has taught me many things, among which is that childlike trust and faith—the spirit more than the letter of Christian Science—heals and saves.
