Signs of the Times

[Rocky Mountain News, Denver, Colo.]

Not in generations, if ever before, has there been such a self-searching of hearts and motives in the church; such an inspection, testing, and trying of the gospel ship from bilge pit to royal topmast. As a result, "Christian Unity!" has become a watchword, heralding a great movement whose ultimate end is nothing less than a merger of all Protestant churches. What more eloquent testimony of the loosening of old cements could be given?

Louisville, Kentucky, provides at the present moment [April] a typical example of the strength and direction of this movement. A series of meetings is being held there under the auspices of representative denominations, the leaders of which contribute a weekly discourse on the subject of Christian unity. We have the startling but inspiring spectacle of clergymen and laymen coming together, not to defend the superiority of their peculiar rites, not to justify their respective doctrines, but to survey and plat the common ground upon which they stand; not to outline the barriers but the bonds between themselves.
