In 1905 I first became interested in the beautiful teachings of Christian Science. At that time I was wandering in the wilderness, dissatisfied with and disappointed in the faith in which I had been reared, searching everywhere for the peace and comfort which religion ought to bring, but never finding it. I used to repeat that beautiful hymn, "Lead, kindly Light," so much in those dark days, and I know since reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that "desire is prayer," as Mrs. Eddy says on page 1 of the textbook, and that poem was a constant prayer with me for the light that never fails.
Finally I became very ill with an internal malignant growth, and the attending physician said an operation would relieve me but he would not guarantee a cure. I wanted to try Christian Science, about which I had read, so my husband went to the only Christian Scientist we knew, who immediately began giving me treatment. She called on me the next day and my healing was complete at that first visit. I destroyed all medicines and got up and went about my household duties, although at first very weak. My husband began the study of Christian Science with me, and although our growth has been slow in some ways,—yet the truth is becoming more and more beautifully clear as we endeavor to follow the way pointed out by Christ Jesus and afterwards made plain by the loving unselfishness of Mrs. Eddy. Although sincerely grateful for the innumerable physical healings that have come to us and for the financial betterment, still those things are as nothing in comparison to our gratitude for the joy and peace that the spiritual growth has brought.
Our prayer is so to live that we shall be fit to be called Christian Scientists, and be able to help others on the upward way.—(Mrs.) Sarah I. Churchill, Chico, Wash.
