Extracts from Letters

"I feel that I have waited a long time before writing of my gratitude for the state of freedom into which I have been growing since learning that I wanted Christian Science. From scoffing at what I believed it to be, my observation of some of those who were living Christian Science led me to ask for a copy of the textbook, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' that I also might find out for myself something of this Science of right living. From the first I was struck with the obvious nature of practically all that I read, and was soon profiting by it, and with the loving and unselfish help which was given me, was able to overcome many so-called minor ills, as well as a very long-standing weakness and apparent source of fear.

"In reviewing the events of this period, it is now plain to me that much of my early building was on the sand; I was prone to make capital of other people's demonstrations without digging out foundations for myself; and of course the inevitable always came about! In the darkest moments, however, help and advice were always forthcoming, and a return to the Bible and our textbook always encouraged me to start again. I found that the foundations had to be put in properly, and every stone tested in its place, and I began to understand that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 146), 'divine metaphysics is now reduced to a system, to a form comprehensible by and adapted to the thought of the age in which we live. This system enables the learner to demonstrate the divine Principle, upon which Jesus' healing was based, and the sacred rules for its present application to the cure of disease.'

"Throughout the war the increasing understanding which I have been gaining has constantly freed me from fear of danger and anxiety, proving many times again that it is never in vain that one turns to Christian Science. I am grateful for the nearness of God which Christian Science reveals, and for our Leader's devoted life, which makes this revelation possible; for class teaching; for helping others a little; for the Christian Science literature, and for the many Christian Scientists who have helped me."
