My attention was called to Christian Science by a friend...
My attention was called to Christian Science by a friend and I turned to it with scarcely a hope of relief from a condition of almost constant suffering. The healing was slow and many days were dark with clouds of discouragement, but afterwards I understood that every word of Truth spoken was one step nearer the goal of freedom. It was about two years after I began to study the Lesson-Sermons that there came to me the realization that I was free. Stomach trouble, weakness, malarial poison, congested liver, had all faded away and discouragement was put to flight. From a condition of semi-invalidism of several years' duration I was restored to health and happiness, and my song of gratitude joined with thousands of others in praise to God. I am very grateful to our Leader and to all who helped me, and my gratitude is growing in proportion as understanding unfolds.
Another healing, of far greater importance to me than the physical release, was the healing of an aching void due to the loss of my mother when I was a child. At the time I was admitted to membership in The Mother Church, the longing was stilled, and afterwards, as the realization dawned that our Leader had revealed the motherhood of God to a waiting world, I understood why human love, of which I shared largely, had left the need untouched. Our Leader best expresses it in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 225), where she says, "Love is the liberator."—(Mrs.) Jennie M. Burns, Danville, Ill.
I am happy to verify my wife's testimony. Out of curiosity I attended with her my first Christian Science church service. The simplicity, dignity, and restfulness appealed to me, and I am very grateful to our Leader who planned these services. While not in need of physical help at that time, I have since been healed of minor ailments; and for release from the tobacco habit I am most grateful.
