If a person having no knowledge of the rules of mathematics...
Boulder (Colo.) News-Herald
If a person having no knowledge of the rules of mathematics were occasionally to read a textbook on algebra during a period of twenty-five years and never solve a problem, his remarks on the subject would hardly be regarded seriously, much less be accepted as authoritative. Similarly one who may have read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, without gaining the demonstrable understanding of its divine Principle and rules, cannot be regarded as authority; nor can any opinions expressed by such a person weigh one jot against the accredited testimony of the vast host who have verified Christian Science teaching by healing the sick and destroying sin, as was promised by Christ Jesus to those who believe on or understand his word.
The unsupported assertion of the critic that Christian Science teaches that disease is "only a figment of the imagination" is refuted by the following quotation from page 460 of the aforementioned textbook: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being."
The voluntary testimony, in one of the Denver Christian Science churches, of a well-known soldier who had just returned from France, furnishes a striking contrast to the critic's assumption that disabled soldiers were told by Christian Scientists that "it was only in their minds; there was nothing wrong with them." The Army doctors in charge of the hospital in Tours diagnosed this man's illness as one of their worst cases of spinal meningitis, and despaired of his recovery. The Christian Scientist who was called to help him dealt with the condition "through right apprehension of the truth of being,"—in other words, knew the truth that God, good, is the only cause and creator, that God's law of harmony and perfection is ever active and ever available to all those who will conform their thinking thereto,—with the result that the soldier was made free, in accordance with the word of Christ Jesus found in the eighth chapter of John.
