Signs of the Times
[Rev. John Clifford, D.D., in London (England) Sunday Express]
The new fact of our day is that the various religions of the world are coming together, releasing themselves more and more from the accretions of falsehood which have gathered about them in past ages, and facing the future with a clearer conception of central truth, and thereby with growing unity in thought and life. This unity is inward—or it is nothing. It is and must be in spirit and aim, in sympathy and purpose, before it is in form and system; it is of the soul before it expresses itself in leagues and creeds, rituals and organizations, and other external modes. But it is here.
I do not say it is a flaming passion or a white-hot enthusiasm. It is not; but it is a power operating quietly and slowly like the fertilizing dew and the sunshine of morning, leading to the exploration of the revelations of God in great souls, in the sacred writings of saints of what we used to call "heathendom," and drawing us into fellowship with the great reconciliations and centralizing truths taught by the universal Spirit that, coming into the world, gives light to every man who will receive it.
