For fourteen years I had suffered from headache, also...

For fourteen years I had suffered from headache, also from stomach and bowel trouble, and finally was told by three doctors that I had a malignant growth and would have to submit to an operation; but I would not give my consent, so the doctor told my husband to take me to a lower altitude. We were then living on a homestead seven miles from Sterling, Colorado. That was in the fall of 1910. We went to California and were there five months, but I received no help; in fact, I grew worse, and the doctors told my husband it would be impossible for me to go home in the condition I was in, as I could never go over the high passes.

During my stay in California I met a lady who had just taken up Christian Science and had all confidence in it. We studied the Lesson-Sermons together, also read the Sentinels, and I became very much interested; so when the time came to start hom I consented to try Christian Science. My friend took me to a practitioner, and with the first treatment all fear left me; it seemed as if I were living in a new world. Treatment was continued during the four days it took to reach our home, and I enjoyed the trip very much. When I got hom and away from my Science friend, however, the struggle was very hard, for there were no Christian Scientist in Sterling then, and my duties as a farmer's wife were arduous. I had the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the Quarterly and a few papers I had brought hom with me, and read little else, but I seemed to grow worse until August, 1911, when I was confined to my bed. I did not give up, but studied harder than ever for two weeks. I would read awhile and then pray. One day my husband was called to town to meet a friend, but I did not seem to have any fear at being left alone. I picked up the textbook and opened to page 391, where our Leader says, "Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them." The thought came to me to get up, and I did; for I was healed. I prepared the supper and opened the gate for my husband on his return. I was all right until 1913, when my boy passed on. The grief and worry brought the old trouble back, but there was a practitioner visiting in our town, and I asked for help and was healed, and have remained well ever since.

For this healing and many others I am truly grateful to God, who has been our only physician for more than eight years, also to Mrs. Eddy for the teaching and understanding of Christian Science.
