Protection Proved

The so-called influenza epidemic brought varied experiences to many; and to those who are studying Christian Science came repeated opportunities for proving the power of Truth as interpreted by Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings.

The writer's thought is still filled with gratitude and the great joy that came to her through witnessing a wonderful healing, and through the absolute protection realized for herself and son during what would have been, lacking an understanding of Truth, a trying time. To begin with, it may be well to state that we live in a small neighborhood where there is neither church nor store. A school we have, but this was closed for a number of weeks in accordance with the general closing order. In the little community there are several who are more or less interested in studying Christian Science, and one other family together with the writer's have been meeting quite regularly for the reading of the LessonSermon, others in the neighborhood sometimes coming in to join in the service.

Though seemingly enough isolated to have eliminated the possibility of contagion from the materia medica standpoint, the thought of it proved sufficient, and the epidemic finally developed in the neighborhood. There were a number of cases more or less severe, but the writer, exceedingly busy with a year's-end office work at the time, while feeling it needful to be on the alert mentally was not conscious of any fear. We had continued our Sunday lessons, and the other family previously mentioned was certainly not "looking for trouble" either; but quite unexpectedly it presented itself, each member of this family becoming affected. The two children responded to treatment readily, but with the parents it seemed more real, and after some days of battling on their own part it was deemed advisable to telephone for the help of an experienced practitioner, which was accordingly done. In a short time the mother was rapidly improving, but the father had, indeed, from the human standpoint, a hard fight with the last enemy. There were several days when mortal mind would have had us doubtful of the outcome; but, thank God, mortal mind wisdom is indeed "foolishness,"—and the father, too, fully recovered.
