It is truly with a heart filled with gratitude that I give...
It is truly with a heart filled with gratitude that I give my testimony. I am grateful not only for the physical healing, but for all the blessings that have come to me through the study of Christian Science, including the better understanding of God and of man's relation to Him. Twelve years ago I had come to the place where my necessity was God's opportunity. I not only was a physical wreck but had lost all faith in the orthodox churches, and could no longer attend the services, since to do so seemed hypocritical.
In the fall of 1905 such a complication of diseases set in that the physician said I must go to the hospital and submit to an operation, which held out no hope of permanent healing, merely relief from the trouble that was causing the greatest suffering. He had taken me to several specialist, and they all agreed that my throat and lungs were in a bad state and that I had no reserve strength, making it hard to build me up sufficiently to fight the condition. I told the physician I could not go to the hospital; as a result the greater part of the winter was spent in bed, and by the next spring I was very much worse. One day the thought came to me that I had tried all doctors had to offer and they had failed to give me any permanent help, so that I should at least be willing to see what Christian Science was. I therefore asked for treatment from a practitioner, and I had not talked to her more than half an hour when I felt that Christian Science was just what I wanted.
My healing was slow, but from the first there was improvement, and I was happier and more contented. I had only asked to be treated for the condition that was said to necessitate an operation, as this seemed to be the thing that I feared the most; I was healed, however, not only of this condition but also of very severe sick headaches, stomach trouble, and a supposedly hereditary bowel disorder from which I had suffered since childhood. Later the doctor asked permission to examine me, and I gave my consent, knowing that he would find me well in every way. He gave me a thorough examination and then said that Christian Science had done for me what he tried to do and could not. I have always been very grateful for this just acknowledgment of my healing, coming as it did from a physician who knew the conditions. I have had better health in the last twelve years than ever before.
