The fact that the particular creed to which our critic subscribes...

The fact that the particular creed to which our critic subscribes may differ from the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures taught in Christian Science, in no way proves the latter to be opposed to the Bible. The Christian Science churches and societies use the Bible in their regular services to a much greater extent, probably, than does any other religious denomination, and the study of Christian Science has resulted in bringing to the Scriptures more earnest, happy, constant students than has any other single agency. The very first tenet of Christian Science, given on page 497 of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, reads as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."

The reading from Science and Health of sentences and parts of sentences so detached from their contexts as to distort their meaning in an attempt to show that Christian Science is antagonistic to the Bible, proves nothing; for in the same manner the Bible itself could be made a jumble of absurd statements. Christian Science is Christian because, being based upon the Bible, it follows absolutely the teachings of Christ Jesus, and it is scientific because it is the absolute knowledge of God and His spiritual law so systematized and classified as to be capable of successful demonstration.

Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," and his command to preach the gospel was accompanied by the no less imperative one to heal the sick. Christian Science accepts the whole Christ, the undivided garment, and the truth of its teaching is evidenced by the testimony of hundreds of thousands of grateful persons all over the world who have been freed from bondage to sickness, sin, sorrow, and other discordant conditions, and brought to a realization of their God-given privilege of health and happiness through its beneficent ministrations. These are the "signs" which Jesus said would follow "them that believe."
