Eighteen years ago, while living in a small western town, I first heard of Christian Science. A copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" was loaned me and I began to read it. I could readily accept the teaching that God is Love, and the chapter on Prayer seemed most wonderful to me, for I had always longed to know how to pray aright; but I could not understand how one could be healed without material remedies, because I believed that God made the herbs and things that go to make up medicines and meant them for such use. My husband seemed very much interested in this teaching, and after six months of reading the literature and attending a church that had been established we were asked to become members and did so. That we were not ready to become Christian Scientists even in name I was soon to find out, for when my husband passed away quite suddenly a few months later, I did not know how to look to God for help and comfort. Still for two years I kept on reading the textbook.

Misfortune overtook me when I began to read literature which claimed to be Christian Science, but which antagonized me so bitterly against this religion and against Mrs. Eddy that I would not read Science and Health; yet I never put it out of my sight; I just stopped reading. Then I married again. My husband's work took him about a good deal, and as I always went with him I almost forgot about the book. I would place it in my traveling bag, but never opened it or read it. About twelve years later, when living in Philadelphia permanently, I said to my husband one Wednesday evening, "Let us go to church to-night." We did so, and what we heard impressed us so much that we have been attending the services ever since. After nearly three years of earnest study we became members, and the blessings that have come to us in the past six years have been numerous. I have been healed of bronchial trouble and asthma (supposedly inherited), chronic sore throat, and severe headaches for which I had been taking liberal doses of morphine. I have also been healed of a badly injured ankle, so that I can now walk for miles, whereas I could not walk two squares or stand for any length of time. My husband has been healed of biliousness, hay fever, and the liquor habit. Our little girl has never tasted medicine, and quite readily responds to treatment. We are very grateful for the privilege she has of going to the Christian Science Sunday school.

We are deeply grateful for the spiritual understanding of the Bible gained through the study of our textbook, and our one aim is to have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." I am especially thankful to God for giving us Mrs. Eddy, whose name I now deeply love and revere.
