About nine years ago I was divinely led to take up the study of Christian Science at a time when I needed it badly. Although two friends had mentioned the subject, neither of them Christian Scientists, it failed to interest me. Later on I read a long review of a book on Mrs. Eddy which rather opened my eyes, and having a case of illness in the house at the time I was impressed with the impotence of materia medica. Soon after this I seemed to get into a bad state of health and all the usual remedies failed. I finally consulted a physician, who put me on a strict course of diet and drugs, but after following his advice for many weeks I was no better. I then found Science and Health at the local library and took it out, without realizing what it was or what it would mean to me. As I studied its pages I seemed to recognize that it was the truth, and gradually, as spiritual light dawned in my consciousness, the dark images of mortal thought gave way. Physical ailments, such as chronic liver trouble, stomach disorder, and catarrh, disappeared, and a distinct improvement in sight enabled me to give up glasses which had been worn for over twenty years. I had been much addicted to the use of tobacco, and although often advised to smoke less had never been able to do so; but shortly after taking up Christian Science I simply lost all desire for smoking and have been free from the habit ever since.
Since my healing I have enjoyed much better health than during any similar period of years in the past. More than all, however, I value the spiritual light which Christian Science has shed on the Bible; although I had always received help from its study it has become far more to me now—a veritable chart of life. Mrs. Eddy has indeed shown us how to prove the Bible to be true. I am also very grateful for the help and kindness received from Christian Scientists in the early stages of my journey from sense to Soul, and for the great help I have found in all our literature. Like St. Paul I can still say that "I press toward the mark," knowing that as I continue in this, more freedom will be realized in all ways and even greater blessings demonstrated. It is difficult to find words to express my deep gratitude for the manifold blessings which Christian Science has brought into my life; nothing else is comparable to its priceless value.
